Basic Neurochemistry, Eighth Edition, is the updated version of the outstanding and comprehensive classic text on neurochemistry. Basic Neurochemistry had its origin in the Conference onNeurochemistry Curriculum initiated and organized by R. Wayne Albers, Robert Katzmanand George J. Siegel under the sponsorship of the National Institute forNeurological Diseases and Stroke, June 19 and 20, 1969, Bronx, New York. At thisconference, a group of 30 neuroscientists constructed a syllabus outline delineatingthe scope of a neurochemistry curriculum appropriate for medical, graduate andpostgraduate neuroscience students. Out of this outline grew the first edition,edited by R. Wayne Albers, George J. Siegel, Robert Katzman and Bernard W. Agranoff.It was anticipated that the book would evolve with the emergence of the field andwould stimulate continuing reappraisal of the scientific and educational aspects ofneurochemistry.
The department also offers an American Chemical Society (ACS) major in chemistry, which is of value for students pursuing a career in chemistry and/or an advanced degree in chemistry or a related field. Within the ACS major students may choose to focus on various concentrations. The concentrations available are called traditional, biochemistry or neurochemistry. Students typically choose an ACS major with the traditional concentration if they are interested in a professional career in chemistry or an allied field. Students specifically interested in working in the area of neuroscience or biochemistry are encouraged to consider these concentrations.
